• Roots of the Russian Language: An Elementary Guide to wordbuilding (George Z. Patrick, 1989)
• Modern Russian Grammar: A Practical Guide (John Dunn and Shamil Khairov, 2009)
• Lonely Planet Phrasebook
• Oxford Beginner's Russian Dictionary—this volume is slim enough such that you can thumb through it and quickly identify any common vocabulary you don't now. Obviously not comprehensive, but useful for a starting word list and the concise grammar info
